HORSE DRIVES

Joe Bassett has 100 head of registered quarter horse mares and yearling fillies that need to be trailed down the Old Sioux Trail into the Dryhead country each spring. We keep these mares at the ranch all summer in mare bands while the young colts grow up. Then in late fall we trail them back to Wyoming to the winter ranch and winter pastures.

Joe Bassett has raised his horses in this country for most of his lifetime. He has always been able to winter them at the ranch, however, with the introduction of wolves into our area, and also with sightings of lions during the last few years, we started to experience killings of our colts over the winter. Therefore, it has become necessary to change our schedule by starting to trail these horses out of Montana and into Wyoming for the winter, and back into the ranch in Montana in the spring. We will trail the horses out of the ranch in the fall after all of the fall cattle drives, and we will trail the horses back into the ranch in the spring before the spring cattle drives.

Please note: We have changed the dates to cover a complete week.

We have planned a Spring Horse Drive that will begin before our regular cattle drives. We will trail our registered Quarter Horse brood mares, yearlings and two year old horses (about 100 head) 50 miles into our ranch in Montana. These mares are scheduled to foal around the first part of May.

We pick you up at the airport in Billings, Montana on Sunday by 3:00. We will go to the Dryhead Ranch where we will stay each night. There will be two days gathering (in the fall) and three days of trailing. We will take a day to visit Cody, Wyoming which is a fun western town with the biggest Western Museum and Remington Gun collection exhibit in the West. There will be time to do some riding at the ranch and short side trips to the Devils Canyon Overlook and a tour of the Carolyn Lockhart Ranch which are both part of the Dryhead Country history. We have planned several hours of Horsemanship tips from our cowboys on several of the days when we will have extra time. All in all it is a once in a lifetime exciting experience. Schively will capture each day on video and share with you at least 100 still photos of the countryside and the horses as they move through the countryside.

We will return you to Billings by 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon. Most of our guests stay in Billings on Saturday night and fly out on Sunday morning.

We have several requirements. We have limited our capacity to 10 guests per Horse Drive. We require that they be experienced riders and come prepared for cool weather and a varying schedule. We charge $1500. per rider for a week.

During our Fall Horse Drives in November we will meet everyone at the airport and travel to the ranch. We will trail our registered Quarter Horse mares from our Dryhead Schively ranch in Montana to our winter ranch in Wyoming. We will spend two days gathering the mares and three days trailing the mares and young horses. Be prepared for cold weather and a fast paced ride. We will stay at the bunkhouse at the Dryhead Schively Ranch each night.

Please email us back with any specific questions. Thanks for your interest in our horse drives and we sure hope you will come and ride with us. This is a exciting, beautiful experience. Hope to see you at Schively in 2005.
